"A Cytomorphological Study of Thyroid Lesions with Special Reference to Macrophages"
نویسندگان
چکیده
Background and Objectives : Fine needle Aspiration cytology (FNAC) plays an important role in the evaluation of the nodules in the thyroid gland & selection of patients for surgical treatment. The present study was undertaken with the following aims and objectives:1. To study morphological features in thyroid aspirates. 2. To study the cytomorphologic attributes useful in distinguishing between neoplastic and non-neoplastic lesions. 3.To identify conditions associated with presence of macrophages Methodology : The current study comprised 240 cases with FNA smears from patients with enlarged thyroid (diffuse/nodular). Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology was done and the slides were stained with routine stains plus special stains as and when required. Results & Conclusion : The results of this study illustrate that if PTC and Hurthle cell neoplasms are excluded, the presence of macrophages strongly supports the diagnosis of benign colloid nodule (P < 0.0001). FNAC proved to be a safe, inexpensive, repeatable and rapid procedure in which no hospitalization or anaesthesia is required.

Cytomorphological Patterns of Nodular Lesions of Liver
Background and Objectives: Nodular lesions of liver are usually neoplastic (primary or metastatic), although inflammatory lesions can occur. The objectives of this paper were to study the cytomorphological changes in various nodular lesions of liver and to correlate the cytomorphological findings with biochemical parameters especially serum alpha-fetoprotein. Materials & Methods: A cross-sect...
متن کاملPapillary carcinoma thyroid – A cytomorphological study
Nuclear grooving; Pseudoinclusion; Thyroid; Papillary Background: Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology is a widely accepted diagnostic tool for thyroid lesions. It is well known that nuclear features form the mainstay of diagnosis for papillary carcinoma thyroid. Focal nuclear features can be missed unless carefully looked for and pose diagnostic difficulty. The aim was to study the cytomorphologica...
متن کاملCytomorphologic features distinguishing Bethesda category IV thyroid lesions from parathyroid
BACKGROUND Thyroid follicular cells share similar cytomorphological features with parathyroid. Without a clinical suspicion, the distinction between a thyroid neoplasm and an intrathyroidal parathyroid can be challenging. The aim of this study was to assess the distinguishing cytomorphological features of parathyroid (including intrathyroidal) and Bethesda category IV (Beth-IV) thyroid follicul...
متن کاملHistopathological Study of Thyroid Lesions
Thyroid gland disorders of various types; congenital , infectious, autoimmune, benign and malignant lesions. In the present study we have focused on all the disorders with special reference to age, sex, etiology, etiopathogenesis, complication and pathological diagnostic part of thyroid lesions. This study helps in the detection of thyroid lesions in the early diagnosis, treatment and assessmen...
متن کاملThe Diagnostic Role of the Marginal Vacuoles in FNAC of Solitary Thyroid Nodules.
CONTEXT FNAC thyroid is more sensitive as well as specific in segregating neoplastic and non-neoplastic thyroid lesions. Identification of predominant cell pattern, cell morphology and background details in FNAC smears play an important role in categorisation of various thyroid lesions with accuracy. Marginal vacuoles (MVs) have been described as irregular cytoplasmic vacuoles with largely unst...
